Weymouth Parks, Gardens and Weymouth Arboretums

Perhaps best known for its beaches and sandy landscapes, Weymouth is also home to a number of prominent greens areas, with several large central gardens and parks. Often boasting coastal views, many of Weymouth's parks are family friendly and feature playing fields, lawns and children's playground areas.
What could be nicer than sitting on a bench in the Greenhill Gardens or the Nothe Gardens on a sunny, summer day and enjoying an ice cream whilst marvelling at the sea views? Nature lovers should not miss the Radipole Lake RSPB Nature Reserve, which enjoys an island setting close to the town centre. Here are Weymouth's main parks and gardens.

A notable grassy area enjoying an elevated position on a steep cliff top, the Bowleaze Cove is centered around an especially scenic stretch of shingled beach, where the River Jordan meets the waterfront. A popular spot for flying kites and walking dogs, many people choose to come here simply for the views and on-street parking spaces can be found nearby, together with a cafe.

Weymouth Parks and Gardens: Greenhill Gardens - Weymouth, Dorset, England, UK
Sited just beyond Brunswick Terrace and directly adjacent to the seafront, the Greenhill Gardens are always overflowing with bright colours and striking displays constructed with annual bedding plants. At its peak during the height of the summer months, the true centrepiece at Weymouth's Greenhill Gardens is without doubt its magnificent floral clock. With coastal views and next to the promenade, the gardens also contains a cafe at the entrance, a putting green, bowling, tennis courts and an ornate wishing well, amongst other features.

Weymouth Parks and Gardens: Sandsfoot Gardens - Old Castle Road, Wyke Regis, Dorset, England, UK
The Sandsfoot Gardens are based around the remains of the Sandsfoot Castle, which dates back to the early part of the 16th century. Overlooking the scenic coastline and Portland Harbour, the Sandsfoot Gardens may be fairly small, but they are particularly colourful and fragrant, with rose bushes and plenty of flowers during the summer months. A coffee shop serving simple refreshments is available to one side of the gardens, complete with outside seating areas.

Weymouth Parks and Gardens: Lodmoor Country Park - Weymouth, Dorset, DT4 7SX, England, UK
A short walk from Weymouth's Esplanade, Lodmoor Country Park covers a vast area and spreads for more than 300 acres / 120 hectares. The park in brimming with things to do and offers a host of recreational activities and leisure facilities, including nature trails, picnic tables, areas suitable for barbecues, a play area, a cafe and also a pub serving hot food. Due to its size and location, the Lodmoor Country Park often hosts many of the area's largest events, including car rallies and even circuses. Also in this area is the important Lodmoor RSPB Nature Reserve, the extremely popular Sea Life Centre and a short pitch and putt golf course.

Weymouth Parks and Gardens: Princess of Wales Gardens - Weymouth, Dorset, England, UK
Previously referred to as the Radipole Park Gardens, Weymouth's magnificent Princess of Wales Gardens are a true oasis and worth searching out. With springtime bulbs, summer herbaceous borders and bedding plants, and plenty of autumnal shades, the Princess of Wales Gardens feature areas of formal planting, long pathways, benches and neatly trimmed lawns. Sporting facilities can be found next to the gardens and include a soccer pitch, skate park, tennis and basketball courts, and playground areas for young children.

The Nothe Gardens are located around the historic Victorian Nothe Fort and lead towards this imposing structure. Overlooking the harbours of both Portland and Weymouth, the Nothe Gardens feature lawned areas suitable for sports, ball games and impromptu picnics. The area is known for is high concentrations of wildlife and in recent years, grey squirrels have become a common sight around the gardens. Nearby, rock pools provide plenty of interest for young children, while a kiosk next to the Newton's Cove area offers welcomed refreshments, such as soft drinks, ice creams and lollies.
